Georgia Fall Game Jam 2012

Better than never, but still quite late.  I’m back from the ether. It’s time for an update.

Well, well, well. It has been  a while since this blog’s seen any new posts, but that’s about to change. With this latest installment, I’ve got a few tidbits from a weekend ago.

Last weekend at Southern Polytechnic State University , I took part in the Georgia Fall Game Jam 2012.  There, several development teams were challenged to create a fully functional video game within a span of 48 hours. Developers were also tasked to center their project around the theme “Eye of the Beholder.” Interpretation of this theme was limited only by imagination.  14 games were created in all.

“Team Singularity”, of which I was a member, crafted the game Paradigm Shift.

Paradigm Shift is a first-person puzzle-based game in which the player must alternate between duel points of view to navigate a space station in ruin.  Housed in the ship’s cargo, is a mysterious alien artifact who’s seized control of the ship, the crew, and even the player.  The alien infection grants the player with a “second sight”, allowing them to see areas and objects hidden from normal view.

My contributions to the project included concept art (for the robot drones), textures, and the game’s name/logo.

The game is available for download and play here.

Below is a bit of a recap of the event, shot by the organizers.

Sonic CD Contest Results

The contest’s over, so I can finally repost my entry. I’d actually gotten an email confirmation a while ago, but I wanted to wait until it was officially announced.  It looks like the results have been out for a while now (since Dec. 15th), so I guess I’m pretty slow on the uptake.  hehe

Well, as for how I did, I was chosen as one of the first prize winners! I won a free download of Sega’s rerelase of Sonic and a limited edition Sonic CD soundtrack.

You can see my entry among the other winners on Sega’s flickr page.

Sonic CD Fanart Contest

By chance, I found out that Sega was holding a Sonic CD fanart contest in honor of its release on the Playstation Network, XBox Live Arcade, and STEAM.  Jumping at the opportunity, I took a few days off my regular workload to make an entry.

As with the Megaman Tribute, I tried to go with something simple with an atypical concept.  I figured that the special stages from Sonic CD would be just distinct enough to yield an interesting picture without demanding too much time.

Toon Boomin’

I spent the last 2 weeks taking a workshop for animation software called Toon Boom / Animate Pro.  It much more tailored for 2D animation than anything else I’ve used, be it traditional, cut-out, or otherwise.

Here’s some cut-out animation I completed the last week of the workshop.

Sneak Peek

I thought I’d post a little preview of a children’s book commission that I’ve been working on for several months now.

The book is currently undergoing revisions that will result in a big shift in the overall look.  These page examples are early, scrapped versions.

Update: Latest Work

My next foray into Udon’s series of tribute books. This time it’s megaman.

I thought that this time around, I’d try focusing more on concept than technical execution.  I’d figured that perhaps the concept of box art for one of those retro walking robots would be pretty unique.

I also referenced this modern Astro Boy figure.
